Ch7: Somatosensation: Clinical Applications Marissa Bennici 1. Functions of sensation a. Contribution of somatosensory information to movement i. Experiments reinforced the assumption that sensation is essential for movement ii. Difficulties are due to a lack of somatosensory b. Somatosensory information protects against injury i. Prone to pressure induced skin lesions, burns, and joint damage ii. People with congenital insensitivity to pain tend to self-inflict injuries, have bone fractures, joint deformities, and amputations, and to die young 2. Tests for somatosensation a. Covers conscious relay pathways: discriminative touch, conscious proprioception, fast pain, and discriminative temperature b. Quick screening i. Consists of testing proprioception and vibration in the fingers and toes and testing fast pain sensation in the limbs ii. Evaluates function of large and small diameter axons c. Complete somatosensory evaluation i. Includes measuring sensitivity and thresholds d. Interpreting test results i. Used to map a person’s pattern of sensory loss 3. Electrodiagnostic studies a. Sensory nerve conduction studies i. Quantify the function of only the fastest-conducting axons ii.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
