Running head THEORIES THAT EXPLAIN ADOLESCENCE ONSET IN CRIMINAL GROUPS Factors that leads to adolescent engagement in criminal activities. Adolescent is the period between adulthood and childhood. It’s the development from puberty to adulthood, usually between the ages of 11-13 years. It involves changes in social, physical, intellectual spheres and sexual behaviours.This essay will review the theories that explain on adolescent development and criminal, the several misconception about gangs and strategies to use to reduce gang activity. Psychological theories have explained why and how the crime occurs. The three theories; Freud’s theory of sexual stages and development, Erickson theory and strain theory. Freudian development theory, has suggested that the different stages of development to be reviewed. These stages are developed by sexual desires. The elements of desires are unconscious and mostly driven by forces that come from within, as explained by Freud .ego, id and superego. The ego works under social desires. Freud’s theory states that crime is influenced by mental disability which causes conflict between ego, id and superego, it may be as an outcome of incorrect record of the development stage that crime is caused. The criminal behavior is as a result of the childhood experiments. Some of the life events that have occurred in an individual life at an early stage may influence his response.
