Quantum Mechanics is based off of the idea that small particles such as photons, electrons, atoms and molecules behave strangely; therefore, they do not behave like larger objects such as a bullet and abide by different rules. These rules are so unusually different that the controversy revolving them continued on for more than 25 years. Around the 1900s, Newtonian physics was the basis of science 1 . However, when Max Planck postulated that radiation could be explained by the absorbance and emission of energy in quantized amounts, scientists began to realize that their knowledge was far from complete. It was in 1900, when Max Planck first set the foundation for his ideas. Studying the ultraviolet catastrophe, Planck ran into a conflict when he found that the laws of physics inspired that an infinite amount of ultraviolet radiation should be generated from the heating up of a box in which no light can escape. However, the box only came up with colors of red, blue, and white. This led Planck to assume that light was not composed of waves for the sake of producing other results within the experiment. Nevertheless, his accommodation ended up working because the box’s radiation could be precisely described. This conclusion caused a lot of dispute between scientists. In the end, it was when Albert Einstein started to interpret Planck’s results that scientists started to look more closely at Planck’s conclusions. Later, Albert Einstein theorized that the photoelectric effect could be the concept to explain the radiation discussed by Planck, and concluded that light can be thought of particles much like protons and electrons 2 . It is these proposals that gave way to the world of quantum mechanics. An example of quantum mechanics can be seen through the double slit experiment. In the experiment, a source of light is shot through two slits in a barrier, and the image of the light that passes through the slits is observed on a second screen.
