Chapter 17- Drugs for Psychosis Psychosis is characterized by: Delusion s: beliefs not founded in reality Hallucinations : seeing/hearing/feeling something not there Illusions: Distorted perceptions of stimuli o Paranoia: Extreme suspicion o Behavior: inactivity extreme agitation Acute: occur over hours or days Chronic: develop over months/years o Causes: Medications, extreme depression, chronic alcoholism, brain damage, addiction Genetic factors Non-identifiable causes Schizophrenia: Affects 1-2% of the population most common psychotic disorder o Characterized by: Abnormal thoughts, thought processes, disordered communication, withdrawal, high suicide risk o Onset: Early adulthood Men: 15-24 Women: 24-34 o Look for: Positive symptoms: “Add on” to normal behavior o Hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech Negative symptoms : “Subtract from” o Lack of: interest, motivation, responsiveness, pleasure o Causes: Possibly genetic Possibly imbalance of NTs in brain
