Johnson 1 Hannah Johnson Professor Chovanec Humanities I 2113-313 Assignment 2 September 7, 2017 Art from the Past The Chauvet Cave was discovered in 1994. There were three explorers out looking for drafts of air in the rock walls in a part of France, that was when they found the draft that led them to the Chauvet Cave. The Former head of the scientific research for the Chauvet Cave was Jean Clottes. The paintings are older than 32,000 years. The cave is about 13 hundred feet long end to end. There are multiple chambers to this Paleolithic Cave. Each chamber adds a new element to how this cave was used by the paleolithic people. Paintings of horses, mammoths, rhinoceroses, foxes, cave lions, and bears; just to name a few but there are so many more paintings. Cave bear tracks are abundant in this cave, but from what they have researched they were not there at the same time as the paleolithic people. The cave bear skulls where everywhere but not a single human bone of any type. The researchers believe that there where multiple people that used this cave over thousands of years.
