1 Organic Chemistry Lab I Thu. Oct 12, 2017 CHM 205 Extraction Lab Introduction In this experiment, we will be determining the partition coefficient for benzoic acid followed by a liquid- liquid extraction to ascertain the melting point of an unknown compound and subsequently identify said compound. Liquid-liquid extraction is a method used for the separation of compounds compromising a sample mixture by two immiscible solvents. The ability to separate compounds using this method depends on how differently the compounds of the sample mixture partition themselves between the two immiscible solvents, as determined by their partition coefficient (K D ). Materials § Unknown mixed solid § Deionized water § Benzoic acid § Methyl tert -butyl ether § Anhydrous sodium sulfate § Sodium bicarbonate § Hydrochloric acid §

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
