Dana Miller 31 October 2017 Crawford 1.5 Literal Interpretative Evaluative “The White Man’s Burden Why is this in the poem? What is the message about the British Empire? Description of characters/speakers represented in the poem: U.S. soldiers. They are fighting to bring the under developed nation ad people up to a civilized standard. Kipling is talking about the soldiers actions and their treatment. The poor treatment of the soldiers shows just one of the burdens the white men face while on their imperialistic quest. The British Empire is right to continue its imperialistic motives, because in the end it will benefit the people of the underdeveloped nations Plot/Topic of Each Stanza: Stanza 1: Sent your best soldiers forward to capture the heathens Stanza 2: Send in your soldiers, be patient, be simple, and gain profit through others. Stanza 3: End famine, abolish sickness and disease, and try to remain hopeful. Stanza 4: Take the burden of the common men, toiling as serfs. Stanza 5: You will be lames by those you protect and hated by those you guard. Stanza 6: Don’t use freedom as a cloak for weariness as everything you do will be overseen.
