Name: Mariah Patterson Module 03 Lab Worksheet: Skeletal System Part 01 Procedure: Histology of the Bone Tissue 1. Locate the histology slides of bone tissue. Using a microscope, please locate the following anatomical features: Osteon, central canal, osteocytes, canaliculi. Please note your observations below. The osteon is visible in the slide of compact bone. They appear as rings within the bone. The central canal appears white or transparent circles in the center of the osteon. The osteocytes appear as small black dots with lines stemming from them. These lines are canaliculi, or channels that deliver nutrients to the osteocytes and carry away its waste. Spongy bone appears quite differently on the slide. The trabeculae appears pink and as expected it branches off in several different directions. The osteocytes are seen spaced out in rows along the trabeculae. These dots that resemble the cells are also the canaliculi. These channels deliver nutrients to the cells of the spongy bone. Part 02 Procedure: Examination of Bone Tissue 1. Locate the specimens of bone tissue and examine the characteristics and record your observations below: A) Bone soaked in vinegar: The vinegar would dissolve portions of the bone matrix, which would in turn make it flexible or stretchy. B) Bone baked in the oven: Extreme heat would dissolve collagen, this would in turn make the bones very brittle. C) Spongy and compact bone: The compact bone is dense with very small spaces in between the tissue. Spongy bone is less dense and appear relatively unorganized. The spaces inside the spongy bone are quite large and plentiful as compared to the compact bone. D) Bone marrow: The bone marrow appears gelatinous or pasty. Part 03 Procedure: Gross Bone Identification Appendix A Please use the bone/bone landmark key below to appropriately identify the bones and bone landmarks on the skeletal system models found in the lab. This portion of the lab assignment is graded so your accuracy is required.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
