Lecture 6 - Poikilothermy o Varying Tb o Like ectotherms but have mechanisms to keep at around Ta o Fish, amphibians, reptiles (1 mammal) o Cannot sustain high energy activates Their total energy requirement is much lower Allows a lot more variation for temps Work optimally a lot for different ranges o Adaptations to cold Live in micro-environments No escaping cold Cant produce own heat o Danger of formation of ice crystals in cells Have cryo-protectants (antifreeze) Process of freezing is slow Ice nucleating proteins, cell antifreezes, antifreeze proteins and membrane proteins Unfrozen cell o Antifreeze proteins control growth and recrystallization of ice crystals o Don’t want them to get into destructive shapes o Glycerol pumped into cell Helps reduce cell shrinkage bc it has a lower freezing point than water o Membrane protectants so membrane doesn’t break down Cell wall less integral Freezing without protectant o

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
