Why Study History? - To explain the past as a key to an understanding of the present and, hopefully, as a guide to the future What is History? Record of the life of people through the ages Written after careful study Attempts to interpret the significance to human beings of the present What Can We Learn From History? It helps us to make decisions (private and public) by providing examples Helps us evaluate decisions or policies that have been made (success or failure) Helps to determine progress or backlash We can draw parallels to our own experiences and use it to help understand our experiences It provides a setting for literature and the Arts to understand trends or ideology It strengthens our heritage and culture by drawing on great accomplishments (non-limiting thread) What is the Role of the Historian? They interpret the significance of facts after they have collected a body of information from the sources available to them They attempt to describe past events as accurately and impartially as possible
