Structures of the neuron Cell body (soma): -contains structures that manufacture proteins and process nutrients . *contains the nucleus - stores genetic material, chromosomes

Axon: An elongated tube that extends from the cell body. - carry information to other neurons, muscles, glands . **vary in length from very tiny to very long Structures of the neuron
Image of page 8
Glial cells - provide support and nutrition -remove waste products -make up myelin sheath around axons of neurons - assist communication of information between neurons -outnumber neurons x10 Structures of the neuron

Myelin sheath: White fatty coating made up of glial cells. Provides insulation that protects neuron and helps speed up neural transmission. *Lack of myelin -> multiple sclerosis Structures of the neuron Nodes of Ranvier: gaps between myelin along the axon ( where action potentials actually occur )

Axon terminals (terminal buttons): Release chemicals which pass messages on to other neurons . Structures of the neuron

Communication Within the Neuron *electrochemical Action Potential: Resting Potential: Resting Potential: Neuron not firing Neuron is firing down axon (message is being sent to another neuron, muscle, gland)

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
