The Role of Health Care Providers In chronic pain Chronic pain- usually defined as pain that lasts for more than 3 months Opioids frequently prescribed for chronic pain In late 1990s, opioids were advertised to physicians as safe to use for long-term in patients with chronic pain It is unclear that opioids help chronic pain and may make pain worse

The Role of Health Care Providers in Chronic Pain, Cont. Opioids raise risk of addiction, physical dependence, heart problems, and endocrine effects Recommended for physicians to refer patients to pain doctors/clinics when patients are expected to be, or have been, on opioids for long periods of time, or are on high doses Physicians should have honest discussion with patients; even with use of pain killers and opioids patients will still experience pain- goals should be to reduce pain to manageable level, not to eradicate pain

Screening for opioid addiction Have honest and difficult discussions with patients Discuss dangers of opioid use, side effects, and dangers of long-term use, including physical dependence and withdrawal with patient If opioids have been used for a longer period of time, it is important to wean patients off of opioids Have plan in place to assist patients who may be physically dependent
