1 Title or working title of project (in the form of a question, commission or design brief) Is Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) the most suitable way to preserve timber-framed buildings? Project objectives (eg, what is the question you want to answer? What do you want to learn how to do? What do you want to find out?): 1) Is the method of using CFRP to preserve timber-framed buildings FUNCTIONALLY suitable? How does CFRP improve the compression performance of wooden posts? How does CFRP improve the flexural property of timber beams? To what extent does experiment support the argument that CFRP can effectively strengthen timber posts and beams? (In detail, what are the effects of CFRP on their stiffness, ductility, cubic deformation and failure mode?) Do the area / number of layers of CFRP applied influence the experiment outcome? Do wooden posts and beams perform differently under different experiment conditions (Temperature, air humidity, etc.)? 2) Is the method of using CFRP to preserve timber-framed buildings ECONOMICALLY suitable? What is the unit cost of CFRP material? What is the marginal labour cost of training workers for using CFRP? Is it affordable to average-income households? 3) Is the method of using CFRP to preserve timber-framed buildings ENVIRONMENTALLY suitable? Will CFRP bring any pollution to natural environment? Will CFRP destroy the architectural beauty of timber-framed buildings? If it is a group project, what will your responsibilities be? It is an individual work. Section Two: Reasons for choosing this project Reasons for choosing the project (eg, links to other subjects you are studying, personal interest, future plans, knowledge/skills you want to improve, why the topic is important): Personally speaking, I am always interested in architecture and civil engineering. Therefore I find the Project Proposal form Learner Name Learner number Centre Name Centre Number Teacher Assessor Date Unit Proposed project title Is Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) the most suitable way to preserve timber-framed buildings? 2 idea of researching on buildings very stimulating. Thanks to presentations delivered by senior students in our school, the thought of making local links to the project came into my mind. Occasionally, when I was wandering around Shrewsbury, the town which I live in, those black-and-white Tudor style houses caught my eyes. As a traditional building system in England, timber-framing has deeply attracted me with its unique charms. It evokes my curiosity that timber- framed houses survive in today’ s environment increasingly influenced by industrialization and po llution. Then I questioned myself, ‘ what can we do to protect these valuable timber -framed houses with the use of contemporary technology?’ According to the background research, the main problem, strength loss of posts and beams faced by timber-framed houses can be effectively solved with the use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) since it can ‘

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
