One word that I have learned in class - Contextualism Contextualism in art is looking at artwork beyond what we see with our eyes and taking the cultural context to gain a better understanding of it. By this I mean finding out who the artist is, when it was done, where it was done, why was it made, was it a commissioned piece or one the artist choose to do on their own, what was the artist’s living condition, as well what was going on in the world when the artwork was made. All of these aspects can’t be seen in the artwork itself but can help the viewer gain a better understanding or expand their understanding. What is important to note is this information is something the viewer would need to do on their own; it is ultimately up to the viewer to look up the context if they want to gain further insight of the artwork. Contextualism is used when doing an analysis of artwork. It goes beyond a viewer’s first impression or formal analysis and content of the artwork. The formal
