Lauren Mack ENG 224 Writing Assignment #4 Friday, Oct. 28 th Naming According to the Postmodern Nuns According to White Noise, agreeing on the same word for things is similar to believing that there is a God because having the familiarity of someone having the same language as you and/ or the same belief in a God as you create a feeling of safety and relief. Besides a belief in God, the passage shows the way Jack feels about “the picture of Kennedy and the Pope in heaven”, he explains how he felt “sentimentally refreshed” and the Pope had a sense of “homeliness” and “radiance” (302). These feelings Jack gets when he sees something familiar makes him more comfortable and a wave of relaxation comes over him. Even if he doesn’t truly believe in what the Pope preaches, he shares the knowledge of the Pope with the Nuns, causing him to feel secure in that moment of time. These characters are being compared to children as they are “charmingly engaged in a childlike dialogue.”
