Chapter 16 & 17 Chapter 16 New immigrants, Benevolent Societies, and the Nativist response About 70% of new immigrants were from southern or eastern Europe. Czech,  Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Russian, and Slovak were among the  nationalities represented Like old immigrants, the new immigrants came to the U.S. to escape poverty or  persecution Benevolent societies were residents in many cities who formed religious and  nonreligious aid organizations They were created to help immigrants in case of sickness, unemployment, and  death Immigrant workers played an important role in operating the factories that  contributed to strong U.S. economy Many native-born Americans saw immigration as a threat Many charged that the immigrants’ willingness to work cheaply robbed native- born Americans of jobs and lowered wages for all Supported by nativist workers, labor unions began demanding restrictions on  immigration Elisha Otis and Mass Transit Developed a mechanized elevator, which allowed people and materials to be  transported more easily Mass transit extended U.S. cities outward It included forms of public transportation such as electric commuter trains,  subways, and trolley cars Upper-class life and How the Poor Lived Known as nouveau riche, a French term meaning “newly rich”
