Chapter 19 Theodore Roosevelt and the Square Deal, Trustbursting Theodore Roosevelt was President McKinley’s running mate for his re- election McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition and 8 days later  Roosevelt became president He helped reshape the country as surely as he renamed the Executive  Mansion the White House The Square Deal became Roosevelt’s 1904 campaign slogan He promised to “see it that every man has a square deal, no less and no  more.” This pledge summed up Roosevelt’s belief in balancing the interests of  business, consumers, and labor His Square Deal called for limiting the power of trusts, promoting public  health and safety, and improving working conditions Trusbursting—was a campaign launched by Roosevelt administration It filed 44 suits against business combinations believed not to be in the  public interest It was not size that mattered, Roosevelt declared but whether a particular  trust was good or bad for the public as a whole Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act
