Department of Global and Community Health George Mason University FALL 2017 GCH 310 Health Behavior Theories Mondays, 4:30–7:10 pm Instructor: Thomas R. Prohaska, PhD Location: Planetary Hall 120 Email: [email protected] Credits: 3 credits Office Hours: schedule via email Section: 002 Course Description Examines theory for understanding health and health behaviors and their role in the development, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs. Student Learning Objectives Students who successfully complete this course will be able to: Define health education in the context of global public health; Describe the role of social and community factors in both the onset and solution of global public health problems; Identify the causes of social and behavioral factors affecting the health of individuals and populations; Evaluate basic theories, concepts and models from a range of social and behavioral disciplines used in health behavior research and practice; Identify individual, organizational and community concerns, assets, resources and deficits for social and behavioral science interventions from a global perspective; and Differentiate among availability, acceptability, and accessibility of health care across diverse global populations Course Materials Required textbook : Glanz, Rimer, Viswanth, (Eds.). (2015) Health Behavior Theory, Research, and Practice . 5 th Edition, San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass Lecture notes : Lecture notes will be posted each week on MyMason (Blackboard). Additional readings : Assigned and supplementary journal articles and reports will be posted on MyMason (Blackboard) under the ‘Course Content’ tab.
