Bedford Reader: Page 177: Meaning: 1. When the author describes a house divided it starts politically. She’s a strong democrat while he’s a republican. During election season her and her father would not be able to even speak with each other. The civil war in her house is a war of words between the two. Their opposing viewpoints and different territories makes the author describe the divided areas as a war zone because of their similarities to the two opposing sides of war. 5. The authors purpose in portraying her dad is she wants to start by portraying him head strong. In the beginning, she and her dad are described by her as two completely different people but in reality, as the story goes on the author brings the reader to realize that her and her dad are actually a lot alike as opposed to the beginning of the story where they were described as enemies.
