SHELL OIL CSR IN NIGERIA 2 Introduction The core reason for conducting business is to generate revenue and grow. Companies strive to make the most out of the resources available since the resources are scarce and limited in nature. Therefore, the major business task for the managers is to find ways of reducing costs to the minimum while maximizing the revenues. A successful manager is one who finds the right mix of production that minimizes cost and maximizes revenue in the long-run for sustainability and growth. When conducting business, the firms engage employees, the environment and community and all the stakeholders in the area they operate in. the firms also sell their products and services to the consumers to whom they owe a duty of care over their products. The firm owes a duty of care to several stakeholders whom it involves in its business operations ranging from the shareholders, suppliers, customers, the government and any other whom it engages in its operations (Adeyeye, 2012). The entities ought to run the business operations in such a manner that ensures equity, honesty professionalism and integrity to each of these stakeholders, from a social perspective, this is known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR can be defined as the firm giving back to the society and its stakeholders after successful operations. The firm ought to appreciate those that were engaged in its success by coming up with strategies that will ensure the community benefit from the existence of the entity in the locality at the cost of the company. CSR at first may be seen as an expense to the firm, but once the community benefits it is motivated and actively work to ensure more progress and success (EJA, 2017). Social responsiveness ranges from building infrastructure for the community to use like roads, hospitals, schools and supply of power or making the goods available to the users at a lower cost. SHELL OIL CSR IN NIGERIA 3 much lower cost. Apart from these provisions, mining companies or manufacturing companies may emit Chlorofluorocarbons to the atmosphere (Uzoekwe, S. A., 2011). The manufacturing firm ought to come up with ways to ensure that the environmental pollution is contained such that it does not become a problem to the community. In case mining firms dig pits and leave open land cavities after extraction, land reclamation methods should be done to ensure the scenes are not health hazards rather they become beautiful safe sceneries. In light of these, a case study of Shell in Nigeria is used to study on its social responsiveness for mining oil in that country. The study will center its responsiveness to Shell at Port Harcourt Nigeria. The oil mining company has been in operation but it has been characterized by pollution to the environment.
