SOLZHENITYSN 1. Decline in Courage -the U.S. has “lost its civic courage” -noticeable among the ruling and intellectual elites, which causes the  impression of a loss of courage by the entire society -those who are courageous, however, have no influence on public  life -state policies characterized by cowardice -U.S. has occasional outbursts of boldness when dealing with weak  governments, but the U.S. gets paralyzed when dealing with powerful  governments       2.   Well-Being -technical and social progress has caused the development of the  welfare  state -every citizen has been granted the desired freedom and material goods in  such quantity and of such quality as to guarantee in theory the  achievement of happiness, in the debased sense of the word -psychological analysis: constant desire for more and more things has led  to worry, anxiety, and depression -active and tense competition prevents us from developing spiritually -a high degree of habitual well-being is not advantageous to a living  organism       3.    Legalistic Life -legalistic=limits (which are quite broad) of human rights and rightness are  determined by a system of laws -U.S. citizens are skilled in using, interpreting, and manipulating
