Introduction: We all know about the intergalactic opera created by George Lucas. The animation television series based off of the movies titled Star Wars: The Clone Wars is beautifully articulated. It has many connections to the modern world. It displays different cultures, past and present. Characters come from a range of various archetypes. It connects ancient signs and symbols through history. The Clone Wars even has a mythology that shapes our modern beliefs. Chapter 1: Culture There is a definite culture within Star Wars . I have been watching Star Wars the Clone Wars animated television series and have noticed many cultural references similar to different countries on Earth. At this time period, which is hard to estimate, so lets just go with, “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”. The galaxy was at war, the two sides being the Republic versus the Sith Lords and their legion of droids. This war in Clone Wars is similar to World War II with the allies as the Republic and the Sith as the axis powers. Star Wars does an exceptional job at showing the six characteristics that define culture; politics, economy, religion, social life, intellect, and arts. The Republic has a council, which includes multiple Jedi from different Republic planets. That is similar in the way the United Nations is run. The UN began in 1945, post World War II to keep peace internationality. It has “bodies”, some that are similar to Star Wars including the General Assembly, Security Council, and International Court Justice ( un.org ). Yoda would be considered the president of the General Assembly, Obi Wan- Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker act as the leaders of the Security Council. “Security Council, which can approve peacekeeping missions, impose sanctions, or authorize the 2
use of force when there is a threat to international peace and security, if it deems this necessary” ( un.org ). Obi Wan and Skywalker carry out these missions in various episodes, whether they're trying to take down Count Dooku or General Grievous, retake a Sith owned planet to gain an ally, or search for information that might help them end the war. Star Wars and the galactic economy are pretty identical to our World’s economy. Planets use their natural resources to manufacture goods to then trade with other planets, just like countries do on around the world. The United States Great Depression is part of why Germany’s economy plummeted because there was limited trade of goods. Before World War II, Germany was in an economic crisis. Adolf Hilter took order of the country and started ushering Germany to not only get back on a stable economic path, but to gear up for war. According to author Rakesh Sharma, “The size of the German army increased from 100,000 to 300,000. Even as that number ballooned, the country's other industries, such as energy and agriculture, suffered. Trade unions were also banned during this time and everyone was required to enroll a central labor organizations controlled by Nazi chieftains” (Sharma). Similar to how the Sith Lords created an army of droids and try to
