Physics 211 Momentum Pre-lab Name: _______________________________________ #___________ In the experiment you will analyze several 1-D collisions to see whether momentum and/or kinetic energy are conserved. We'll analyze three simulated collisions here using the same methods. Definitions: momentum . Note that momentum is a vector. Take “to the right” as the positive direction. impulse Impulse is the change in momentum. Click on this link: to access the simulation. Click “Continue” after reading the brief instructions page. (We will NOT use the friction button.) (1) Start with an elastic collision . Adjust the orange mass to 1 kg, and the blue mass to 3 kg. Make Orange’s initial velocity 2 m/s, and Blue’s initial velocity 0 m/s. Run the simulation and stop it after the carts collide. Record the final velocities (pay attention to the +/- signs) in the table. (2) Reset the simulation and run it again as an inelastic collision . Record the final velocities in the table.
