Alex Steging Educational Counseling 030x February 10, 2009 Log #3 Rolling in Someone Else’s Wheels I never imagined what an eye opening experience this was going to be. While conducting a simulation in a wheelchair, I had some very interesting, embarrassing, exhausting and informative incidents that I can use to my advantage. Prior to beginning my immersion, I used the Internet to search for any information about what I might expect to encounter while spending the day wheelchair bound. I was surprised to find a wide variety of opinions on life in a wheelchair from different people, some who held very optimistic points of view and others who seemed to dislike their lives very much. I was interested to see what sort of reactions and discrimination might come my way as I undertook this activity. I was fortunate to have a friend who had used a wheelchair last year after a reconstructive knee surgery, and, not only did she allowed me to borrow it, but she offered to accompany me on my trip to Santa Monica for the day. Getting oriented with and accustomed to using a wheelchair seemed like it was going to be as easy as getting on a bicycle and pedaling away. I specifically asked that my friend not instruct me on how to use the wheelchair, as I wanted to figure it out for myself. However, at the start of the simulation I didn't fully understand how challenging using a non-motorized wheelchair can be and I had some troubles getting acquainted with the basic functions of the wheelchair (i.e. how to apply the brakes properly).
