Diet industry revenues Tripled in 1990s Teen magazines tripled from 1990 to 2000 Girls often compare body w/ those in mags resulting in negative feeling about  appearance (Field et al., 2005; inhas et al. 1999) Standards for thinness are changing Playboy centerfolds, Miss America Contestants Women  are 13-19% below that  expected for age Miss America Winners (’22 to ’99) – BMI declined from 22 to 18 The latter indicates malnutrition Average American Model Past, 8% less than average woman (20 years ago) Today, 23% less than average woman (1999)
