Vignesh Senthil AP English 12 11/2/17 03.01B Table Manners: Notes and Thesis Statement Thesis: In the novel A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, the author attempts to convey the main ideas and the narrative behind the devastating French Revolution and the historical intricacies that led to the uprising of France’s poor against the ruling nobility. Dickens is also able to accurately describe the morbid brutality of the revolution, and the overarching bias of the revolutionary justice system. Notes: - The old aristocratic order of the Ancien Régime succumbed to an alliance of the rising bourgeoisie, aggrieved peasants, and urban wage-earners - A poor economic situation and an unmanageable national debt, both caused and exacerbated by the burden of a grossly inequitable system of taxation. - The continued conspicuous consumption of the noble class, especially the court of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette at Versailles , despite the financial burden on the populace - High unemployment
