Station Eleven in Class: Ch 21The lack of anonymity and autonomy that comes with publicity and celebrity plague many characters throughout Mandel’s novel Station Eleven. This being said, Kirsten holds onto the innocence of passion untouched by the greed of society. The idea of publicity being a threat to true creativity has an effect on most all of the characters throughout the book. Kirsten’s distrust of the press exemplifies the idea that celebrity kills passion. Throughouther interview with Francois, Kirsten remains firm on her decision not to answer personal questions. Kirsten’s love for the arts is innocent and pure, untainted by the world of tabloids and celebrity gossip. This being said, she has also lived in the world of celebrity; she has seen how publicity and paparazzi destroyed lives around her, even keeping a physical reminder of how Arthur’s personal life was diminished to a string of text in Letters to V.
