China – European powers divided and claimed various regions Manifest Destiny o Idea behind the Monroe Doctrine saying the US was destined to conquer America without interference from other regions (Europe) o Reason why nobody tried claiming territories in America besides the US Global trade network affected the entire world, directly or indirectly o Created two separate economies between the developed and underdeveloped world o Most regions of the world began to specialize in only a few products Colonies were assumed to be self-generating and prices of luxury items were to remain stable and high o This proved to be false, the prices changed dramatically and people were less inclined to buy o If the price of these product tanks, the economy of the colony goes with it – dependent economies – resulted in huge debts and famine Why colonialism? o
