The Role of the Bourgeoisie Changed their social role in society before 1880s (fall of aristocracy) Changed western civilization to suit their needs – rationality, liberalism, meritocracy (hard work gets you ahead in life) – the Enlightenment ideas They created they world we now live in 1880s-1890s The bourgeoisie withdrew and lost their power/influence in society Why? o The values bourgeoisie stood for became lost and abandoned loss of political agenda/values o When the bourgeoisie became successful they lost their work ethic and became similar to the previous aristocracy (frugality, hard work, etc. lost their importance) o Life became a search for entertainment for the bourgeoisie instead of searching for career – careers were for lesser social classes o The bourgeoisie helped the rest of society to buy into the ideals of the enlightenment but abandoned the ideas themselves as generations passed o The petit bourgeoisie joined the tertiary sector (accountants, clerks, etc.) in
