Cultural Diversity Culture – informally learned by everyone in the world and tells us how to view the world around us; tells us what our role in the society is and why things (should be) are the way they are o We are all brought up with a cultural tradition o Enculturation – the informal process by which an individual learns the traditional content of a culture and assimilates its practices and values o Informal process results in us making natural assumptions about ourselves (as factual and civilized) and others (as different and wrong) o All of our values stem from our cultural upbringing Cultural values put on us as “natural facts” Family Structures o Seems to many as a natural organization 8 false o Matrilineal/Matriarchy/Patrilineal/Patriarchy o Polygene – one man is allowed to marry multiple women Polyandry – one woman is allowed to marry multiple men o Incest relationships – the 1 st cousin debate is not acceptable in western civilizations but preferred in places such as South India
