February 18 Animals & Women Feminism has ignored/relied on animal issues What do animals and science have to do with women? Feminist thought is NEVER just about women 19 th century women participated in anti-vivisectionist campaigns 2 reason not to show interest in animal issues women are closer to animals; humans are considered separate from nonhuman animals = nonhumans less valued not specific species against which we compare ourselves, but the general notion every behavior attributed to animals is considered biological whereas we only consider human physiology our understanding is limited = scientific mode\ reductionism instead of experiments with complex variables, scientists deal with simple variables scientists are denied personhood scientists should work with people who know a lot about animals to lessen
