Women’s movement, civil rights Major issue war in Vietnam Vietnam war hurts US reputation to European youth 60s movements don’t lead to qualitative change in European political by 1970 w/ decline of 60s movements 2 blocs of power in Europe were firmly in place nothing could change it by 1970s one could argue that the west & the east looked at each other as irreversible concrete manifestation policy of detente relaxation of tension reduction of arms race US & Soviets started negotiating reductions in armament programs operated within Europe Germany (divided by Cold War) west & east Germans opened up to negotiations west infused money into east & east relaxed travel restrictions west European countries & US gave economic loans to east European countries
