September 1930-32 no elections Von Bruening ruled because he had support NOT of parliament majority Social democrats had power to call for new elections worried that Nazis would reap benefits German society falling apart unemployment, violence April 1932 presidential elections Hitler ran lost Hindenburg was horrified socialists were allies didn’t like them (conservative) May 1932 Von Bruening was discharged from office Franz von Papen appointed Plan was to use crisis of democracy to get rid of it Need support from people thinks that if he dissolved Parliament and calls for new elections he’ll build up support July 1932 Middle class Protestants and wealthy were a big support base for Nazis
