(i.e. The Seder meal or Eucharist) -Porterfield pg3: first paragraph- definition compatible with Eliad and Campbell; American mythology is talking about the makers of the institution and importance of the holidays (joins people in experience of more ultimate meaning) -H. Richard Niebuhr- 1920’s -very critical of the institutional churches; 900 denominations from 1 Gospel? What is this? -critiques western capitalism, can’t own property without being an accomplice to the ills of capitalism, heavy stuff in the 20’s -haunted by Freud’s challenge to faith, through 1930’s wrestles with critical faith, how can religions faith be firm, dependable in the face of Freud and modern sciences and challenges? -What do we mean by faith? Dynamics? We believe in each other, causes, communities.
