Heather Fackelman April 21, 2009 Honors Ways of Knowing Montclair State University Fundamentalism: Family Resemblances Fundamentalism appeared in southern California at the start of the twentieth century when Milton and Lyman Stewart began to spread a series of pamphlets to “’English-speaking Protestant pastors, evangelists, missionaries, theological professors, theological students…’” and hundreds of other people . The pamphlets, named The Fundamentals: A Testimony of Truth , were made in efforts to stop the deterioration of “’fundamental’ beliefs of Protestantism: the inerrancy of the Bible; the direct creation of the world, and humanity…the authenticity of miracles; the virgin birth of Jesus, his Crucifixion and bodily resurrection; the substitutionary atonement;…and…his imminent return to judge and rule over the world .” To clarify, Ruthven explains: “the word conveys the sense of a cumulative body of ritual, behaviour, and thought that reaches back to the time of origins .” Fundamentalism appeared in America in the midst of “American religious pluralism and the separation of church and state .” The Stewart brothers, like many American Protestants, or “premillennial dispensationalists,” they believed that the End Times prophesies written about in the scriptures “referred to real (not symbolic) events that were shortly due to happen on the plane of human history .” They drew from the ideas of John Nelson Darby, arguing that
