1.28.2009 Research Methods sexology study of human sexuality (sexologist) goal = to help people make better decisions & improve quality of people’s sex lives (relationships, happiness, etc.) gender = subjective; sex = biological 4 methods of research o Case Study - a single subject/small group is studied in depth; in-depth exploration of a given behavior; drawback is limited generalizability (external validity) ex : 1965, Canada young couple with newborn boy had him circumcised; circumcision went wrong & boy lost penis (burned it off); biologically normal, healthy male; went to sexologist John Money @ Johns Hopkins to seek expertise told them to raise him as a girl; boy had an identical twin brother w/ penis = perfect opportunity for case study never identified himself as a female o Direct Observation – highly accurate data, especially if person/animal being observed is unaware; experience it firsthand; watching it as it happen; behavior can be influenced by experimenter;
