Heather Fackelman HONP 112 W-5:30-8:00 Due: 11/12/08 “Technology and Social Isolation” Olympic College published an article entitled “New technology hinders social skills, intellectual conversations for America’s young people.” This article argues that although we have access to faster communication than ever, “a more connected society is simply an illusion.” Siemion says that “commenting on blogs and text messaging is quick, easy, and constant” but it is not a personal form of communication. Face-to-face communication is quickly being replaced by communication through a screen and keyboard. Siemion argues that we rely entirely too much on our cell phones and computers. She worries that because we depend on electronic forms of communication, our future is one doomed to have intelligent people who cannot effectively relay their thoughts. Why? Because we are not used to communicating face to face through speech. I personally agree completely with this article as well as the professional
