In his article, Yang Zewei (2011) brings out that the legal system in China was based on the Confucian worldview, which in turn was based on the Celestial Empire as well as the Tributary system until the 19th century. The Chinese worldview was not compatible with the international law or relationships that existed between European countries. However, after a series of five wars, especially the Opium wars, which were coerced on China due to the collision of international laws with the Confucian worldview,China was left in a humiliating position having had to sign unequal treaties post every war. This collision came to an end as the Western forces were immensely powerful and China had suffered greatly due to successive wars in a period of 60 years between 1840 and 1901.
