ETHICS OF MONSANTO Abstract The documentary The Future of Food is all about Monsanto and other biotech companies and the truth behind genetically engineered farming. It discusses how patents are used in the farming industry. They also discuss what exactly GMOs are and how the FDA is involved. There are also loopholes in government jobs because sometimes the people running the food regulations are also those who are working for privately owned businesses. The GMO farming has created a loss in food diversity and genetic pollution among the crops. This is ruining developing countries food supply. These companies also go into developing countries and give them mass amounts of food and start giving them GMO seeds to plant in thinking that this will help them get out of there food crisis but it is actually damaging them economically. The big question it all comes down to is, is it ethical for these big companies to get away with what they are doing? And is it fair how much money they are actually making off of it? 2

APA RESEARCH PAPER 5.17.17 8:16:55 PM Ethics of Monsanto It is notoriously known that the next best thing to eating food, is talking about it. It is human nature to question where the food that is being consumed actually came from, especially in this day in age where we are no longer hunter and gatherers but “shoppers”. Instead of having to hunt or farm our own food we can now go to any local grocery store to pick up desired food. With this, it is hard to say where that food was grown, or how it was raised, and now the new biggest topic of is it genetically modified? There has been an up rise in research on genetically modified food, or GMOs, and how they affect humans and even the environment. There has been many claims on GMOs, some saying they are perfectly fine to consume and plant, others stating that they cause cancer, and some companies claiming this is how world hunger will come to an end. With industrial farming come greedy corporations over taking the agriculture world. Monsanto is one corporation that is big in the seed industry and has caused a lot of ethical up bringing’s to the farming industries. 1.a The documentary The Future of Food is about all the harm big companies and patents do to farmers around the world. Monsanto is the main target in this documentary. There was an interview done with Andrew Kimball and he shared some of his insights on this company and how patents work in general. Kimball said, “They can take one seed they want, replace those seeds, and they will own the market place” (Koons & Butler, 2016). Big companies do this that way they can patent the seed. This means they own the seed and anywhere this seed is planted they own that crop. It was also said that who ever owns seeds controls the food (Koons & Butler, 2016). This goes into ethical egoism, these seed companies are based on a self interest of making money, not helping the farmers. 1.b Monsanto is widely known for buying up all of the seed companies. In 2005, Monsanto bought up 40% of the United States seed market along with 20% 3
