Part 1: Key TermsThe Decameron:book written by Boccaccio in the 14thCentury. It is a collection of novellas written in the vernacular by the 14thcentury Italian author Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375). The book is structured as a Frame story containing 100 tales told by a group of seven young women and three young men sheltering in a secluded villa just outside Florence to escape the Black Death, which was afflicting the city. It shows response to plague and change of society.3 crop rotation: During the high middle ages, when fields were divided into three for efficiency and for the plants to maximize the nutrients of the soil and become healthier to consume. One for beans, one for wheat, one left fallow for soil to regain nutrients. Abandoned when population increased which led to famine. Shows a society at its peak that is starting to experiment.Marco Polo: He was a Venetian merchant traveler. He embarked on an epic journey to Asia with his father and uncle where he acts as Mongol official, returning after 24 years to find Venice at war with Genoa; Marco was imprisoned and dictates his stories to a cellmate. He was released in 1299, became a wealthy merchant, married, and had three children. He was not the first European to reach China, but he was the first to leave a detailed chronicle of his experience. His book, The Travels of Marco Polo”, inspired Columbus and many other travelers. Menocchio: He said that the world was born from cheese and worms/ chaos and went so far as to say that Jesus was born of man and Mary was not a virgin, that the pope had no power given to him from God but simply exemplified the qualities of a good man and that Christ had not died to redeem humanity. He was put in prison, released, and then couldn’t keep his mouth shut so they executed him. He provided the context for the mid 1500s and provided a new new societal history. Written in 1599 the book uses inquisition records to detail what life was like at the time. The way history is recorded shows hierarchy.Henry VII of England:A Tudor, He defeated Henry 3rdat Bosworth field. He is last man standing after the war of the roses. His aim is to centralize power and to dilute the power of the nobles, which he does by tying them to court: He does not have a strong connection to the throne, gets noble support by inviting them to court; conditional bonds act like probation aka behave or; acts of attainder “heavy lordship”: your whole family loses power if you are killed fortreason; splits up land so that no one person other than him has a realm of power. Skimmington:A procession made through a village intended to bring ridicule on and make an example of a nagging wife or an unfaithful husband. A type of surveillance and regulation in villages. Shows that villages were their own functioning societies and that they heldspecific boundaries.
