Alyssa Garcia February 15, 2008 Soc 308 Prof. Vasquez Exam question 1 “Recent decades have witnessed profound change in Latin America. The imperatives of a globalized world economy have interacted with local economic, political, and cultural landscapes to produce an array of largely unforeseen consequences across the region” (Roberts and Woods). Two Latin American countries that have seen these changes are Argentina and Mexico. In order to compare and contrast both of these countries one must compare the political regimes, welfare systems during the ISI years, and the neo-liberal reforms experienced through out the decades. Political regimes consist of the institutions that power over a political community. There are many different regimes experienced in Latin America. One example is populism, a regime that favors inclusion with a disregard of constraints. Activist developmental, with a support of private sectors and extensive regulation. Lastly, neo-liberalism, which is a version of liberalism with efforts to reduce interferences with markets, also has a repressive government
