David Gamble May 26, 2014 Research Question Are there distinct ways to differentiate between chemical and physical changes in reactions? Hypothesis If you mix hydrochloric acid with calcium carbonate, then it will produce a chemical reaction. Materials: Safety goggles Lab coat or apron Test tube 2 mL of 3 M hydrochloric acid Teaspoon of calcium carbonate Method Before the experiment starts, make sure the proper safety items are worn, and that your lab area is clean free of any potential hazards. 1. Take a test tube, rinse it with water to make sure it is clear of any potential contaminants. 2. Add 2 mL of hydrochloric acid to the test tube. 3. Tilt the test tube slightly, and aim it away from any other people. 4. Add the teaspoon of calcium carbonate to the hydrochloric acid, and shake gently. 5. Observe and record your data. 6. Dispose of the test tube contents in the proper way. 7. Rinse and clean the test tube,and return it back to the proper place.
