Running head: DEPRESSION & ELDERY 1Depression and the Elderly Population Dana L. Shensky Walden University
DEPRESSION 2Abstract To my surprise, I had researched depression and found that a whopping 19 million Americans every year are affected by depression (mha.net). Depression affects Americans of every age, gender, race and culture. The elderly population are at risk more than any other population due to having many medical issues and illnesses, which increase their risk. Symptoms of depression are sometimes overlooked and untreated when they coincide with other illnesses, so many Americans don’t even know they are depressed, when they are. I found six articles which take a better look at depression, its symptoms, the races it affects, and how the older population can get the help they need to combat the illness, as well as what interventions can be used in order to help treat the depression.
