Fluids & Electrolytes Worksheet Important Note: You must write your answers in your own words for this assignment. 1. What is the difference between the ECF and the ICF? Would you classify blood plasma as ICF or ECF? ECF (AKA the extracellular fluid) contains the interstitial fluid, plasma, and other body fluids. ECF denotes all body fluid outside of the cells. ICF ( AKA intracellular fluid) is cytosol, and is the remaining fluid. Blood plasma is considered ECF. 2. Is interstitial fluid ICF or ECF? Interstitial fluid is Extracellular fluid. 3. What happens to Blood Pressure when Blood Volume increases? Increases in the stroke volume, due to increased venous return, there is an increased cardiac output and increased blood pressure. 4. What effect would dehydration have on blood pressure? Why? Dehydration causes osmosis to move water out of the ICF and into the ECF for both to be isotonic. This causes both to be lower in volume than they were before the fluid loss. ICF has twice the volume of ECF so the ECF change is “relatively small.” If the fluid imbalance continues the loss of water causes a fall in plasma volume and blood pressure.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
