Attacks were supposed to be precise, so as to avoid civilian casualties, and hit factories, airfields, railroads, and other high-value targets most of the time.B.Fighting on the Western Front- US, UK, Canada, etc.C.Fighting on the Eastern Front- the USSR: 1700 Soviet cities wiped off the map by invading German forces- led to severe Soviet reprisalsD.Fighting on the Mediterranean Front (in North Africa, followed by Italy)- US, UK, then Italy as wellE.Between these fronts, Germany lost a huge percentage of its working male population, resulting in a philosophical change that needed women to enter theworkforceF.Holocaust (“Final Solution”) diverted needed resources and partially explains why Germany lostG.Postwar Effectsa.Germany was divided into four zones of occupation- British, American, French, and Soviet (duplicated for the city of Berlin)b.Soviet actions in their zone were brutal- removing anything that could be shipped back to Russia for industrial use, raping females of all ages,lootingc.Millions of German refugees were displaced, trying to flee to American or British zonesd.Germans would not surrender to Russians, preferring death over what awaited them (surrendering to Americans was called the “Golden Surrender”)e.Concentration camps cleaned and preserved by local Germansf.Rebuilding post-war was also complicated by the missing males lost inthe warg.Nuremberg Trials convicted the first war crimes defendants in history, including Göring, Dönitz, Hess and Speerh.Cold War tug of war over Germany lasted to the endFRANCE (Daladier/Reynaud/Petain)A.Phony War/ Sitzkrieg/ Bore War (9/39-5/40)a.France joined Britain in declaring war on Germany on Sept.3, 1939 as a result of the invasion of Poland.b.Prime Minister at the beginning of the war was Edouard Daladier, who had been a part of the Munich Agreement with Hitler over Czechoslovakia. Daladier was replaced by Paul Reynaud in March 1940.c.Invasion of France in May 1940 led to a near-complete blitzkriegtakeover by Germany in two weeks (Paris was declared an open city to avoid its destruction), before France surrendered and a pro-German French government headed by Henri-Philippe Petain took charge in Vichy.
B.Vichy government oversaw about 1/2 of France as a puppet government, and evenrounded up French Jews (without being requested to do so) for deportation to Auschwitz. A secret police modeled on and loyal to the SScalled the Milicewas created to help keep order. Naval units under the direction of the Vichy government fought against the Allies when they invaded North Africa in Operation Torchin 1942.
