The author focuses her efforts of this idea on the main character Tita. Throughout the entire story Tita is faced with much oppression from her entire family. These situations that she faces force her to eventually rebel against her own family members. Tita’s character is one that starts off unwilling to stand up for herself but as she ages she gains the strengthto start standing up for herself.Mama Elena, Tita’s mother, is one of the big oppressions that Tita faces in the early parts of the book. These oppressions become obvious early on in the book when Mama Elena explains to Tita that shewill be unable to marry because she has to take care of her “until the day she dies” (11).
