Ryan PeersMay 26, 2009Summary of Tiananmen Square MassacrePeriod 6/7The Tiananmen Square Massacre happened for a lot of reasons. After the official Hu Yaobang died students began to gather into the square, on April 15 1989, in memory of the official. Soon though many others joined in and began requesting more democraticrights from the corrupt Chinese government. Many of these protestors varied on what they wanted but all of them were fed up with the People’s Republic of China which controlled the government. The protestors and students also brought in the Lady Liberty which was meant to resemble the Statue of Liberty. Although protests occurred all throughout China, Beijing was the main center of conflict. Then on May 20, 1989 martial law was initiated and the military advanced towards the square in order to clear it of protesters but they failed because the protestors would not let them through causing them to fall back. During and after this though many students went on a hunger strike in order to try and persuade the government to accepting their demands but it failed.
