WRA 150 MSU On April 25th 1976, the Los Angeles Dodgers were playing the Chicago Cubs at Dodgers Stadium in a regular season baseball game when two fans (later revealed to be protestors of the Vietnam war) ran onto the field with an American flag in their hands. They laid the flag down and drenched it in lighter fluid and just as they were about to light it, Rick Monday of the Cubs dashed to the site and pulled the flag away from the two fans. Afterwards, the crowd simultaneously broke into a rendition of “God Bless America.” Afterwards, Monday, a former Army reserve was quotes as saying, “that little piece of cloth represents a lot of rights and freedoms that people have given up their lives to protect." Many have since labeled the incident as the most patriotic moment in sports history but what does that really mean? Patriotism is defined as a “love of one’s country or zeal in the defense of the interest’s of one’s country”(OED). Given this definition, Monday stopping the two fans demonstrates a certain love for the country, while the two fans seeking to destroy the symbol of “rights and freedoms” were acting against the definition. Burning the American flag in protest can never be patriotic because it is subversive to the ideals of love and respect which defines patriotism. Burning the American flag as a sign of protest drew the nation’s attention in1968 when anti-Vietnam protestors regularly burned the flag in demonstration of the war. Acting quickly, Congress passed the first Flag Protection Act which prohibited the desecration of the American flag. The Act would not last long,
