L AB VIEW C LASS 34: S ENSOR C ALIBRATION Overview The objective of this activity is to learn how to collect and use sensor input with the EV3. You will work with two EV3 sensors: the color sensor, and if you have time, the ultrasonic sensor. You will keep the EV3 tethered to your computer during this activity via the USB cable. Important: because you will keep the EV3 connected to your computer, in order to see the Front Panel, you need to keep all your VIs Targeted to Computer. DO NOT Target to EV3 – some of these icons may not/will not work well then. Scenario The floral industry is a billion dollar industry in the United States. Customers prefer certain types of flowers and colors. Therefore, development of an automatized system for color classification would benefit the industry. Color readings are affected by distance, however, and so contemporaneous measurement of distance and color is useful. In this activity, your team will implement a basic flower color classifier, as an example task that uses Lego sensors Materials Required: EV3 Lego Kit, especially including the brick, color sensor, motor, and cables.

When you receive the Lego kit from your peer teacher, please connect the EV3 to your laptop, start up LabVIEW, and insure that the EV3 is working and that you can connect to it via the USB cable Task 1: Connection of the color sensor, and simple color sensor readings The EV3 color sensor looks like this: Note that your kit may also have a NXT light sensor in it that looks similar; please do not use it. Using one of the telephone cables that comes in your kit, connect the light sensor to the EV3 brick in Port 1.
