Lawrence 1 Chase Lawrence Professor Gregory Caicco Civilization 1: Ancient through Medieval 7 March 2016 Defining Western Civilization When we think of or hear the world civilization, we think of ancient times in places like Rome or Egypt. Ironically, the word civilization itself is derived from the Roman word civilis, meaning to be "suitable for a private citizen". The Random House Webster's College Dictionary (1997) defines the world civilization as: 1. an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science and government has been reached. 2 . those people or nations that have reached such a state. 3. any type of culture, society, etc. of a specific place, time or group: Greek civilization. 4. the act or progress of civilizing or being civilized. 5. cultural and intellectual refinement. 6. cities or populated areas in general, as opposed to unpopulated or wilderness areas. 7. modern comforts and conveniences, as made possible by science and technology.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
